Game Log - Problem Child Pedro
Orioles Win, 7-2
Sunday, April 4 2004
RED SOX (0-1) @ ORIOLES (1-0)
WP: Sidney Ponson (1-0)
LP: Pedro Martinez (0-1)
The common consensus is that Boston is the team to beat in the AL East. Well, after playing their first game of the year, the Boston Red Sox find themselves behind the City of Tampa in last place.
This game was lost by Pedro in the 2nd when Mr. Fragile got his feelings hurt by Javey Lopez’s 1st pitch home run. Jay Gibbons followed that with single to right. Gibbons then stole second on a 1-0 strike to David Segui. With the next pitch, Pedro drills Segui with a fastball in the back. Announcer John Miller seamed to think Pedro was just trying for a bit extra something on his velocity and overpitched. I think he was pissed and took it out on the batter. Still frustrated, Pedro fields a dribbler from Larry Bigbie and promptly throws the ball away. Gibbons scores on the error. Next up, Louis Mota drills a single into left scoring Segui. After that, Pedro calmed down, allowing only two more hits through the 6th. He finished with 7 hits, 2 ER, 1 walk, and 5 K’s. He also left the ballpark right after he was pulled, team player that he is.
BTW - Don’t you think that if a run scores on an error by a pitcher, he should be charged with the earned run and the error?
Mike Timlin comes in and builds himself a nice, fat 40.50 ERA by allowing 3 runs in 2/3’s of the seventh. Allen Embree had to come in and mop up with a pop up.
Orioles’ starter Sidney Ponson showed why the Giants were smart in acquiring him at the end of last season for their playoff run and why they were idiots for letting him go back to Baltimore. His fastball looked great, hitting 94-95 with some really nice movement. He still looks like Joe Borowski’s fatter brother, tho.
Really good was Javey Lopez, going 3-4 with a dinger and throwing out base-thief Gabe Kapler in the 2nd.
Really bad was the Red Sox defense. I’m amazed they were only credited with 2 errors because there were times where I could swear I heard the 3 Stooges theme playing. They must have thought it was one of those full-priced exibition games before the real season starts. The only bright spot was Pokey Reese who looked spectacular at shortstop and seemed to be making the most of his time filling in for the Achilles-laden Nomar. Is he making a case for himself if (when) Nomar bolts at the end of the year? If so, he certainly didn’t help himself offensively, especially laying down a very weak bunt with 2 on and 2 out in the fourth. He did walk twice but looked almost timid at the plate. In fact, the Red Sox as a whole kept stranding men at 2nd and 3rd the entire game. Every inning seemed to end with a 2 on, 2 out pop-up.
Overall, not a good start for the team that will supposedly meet the Cubs in the World Series. It’s a long season, but so far it looks like the Orioles spent wisely and the Red Sox have some more work to do.

To be a good lenient being is to be enduring a amiable of openness to the far-out, an cleverness to guardianship undeterminable things beyond your own restrain, that can lead you to be shattered in uncommonly outermost circumstances for which you were not to blame. That says something very weighty thither the fettle of the honest life: that it is based on a conviction in the uncertain and on a willingness to be exposed; it’s based on being more like a spy than like a prize, something rather feeble, but whose very precise attraction is inseparable from that fragility.

Wow – now that’s perspective! I think we often react in agreement or disagreement because of our emotions, but hearing another side, passionately presented, really makes us think!
